St. John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz) was noted for the riguer of his conduct, and for his emphasis on internal meditation and silent prayer.

He died in 1591 leaving a small corpus of  poetry and prose, and has come to be regarded as one of Spain's major poets,  as well as one of the greatest Catholic mystics.
